JEWELRY CARE
Each piece of jewelry requires care to last over time. On this page, you will find a practical guide to help you take care of your jewelry.
Nokike jewelry are made with semi-precious stones, plating, metals such as brass and red bronze, metals with great charm, and silver as a precious metal .
Bronze, brass and silver are metals subject to oxidation over time, especially the first two due to the presence of copper, and it is a completely natural process determined by the acidity and pH of the skin. This could cause a green halo to form on the surface with which the metal comes into contact, but it is not to be considered an allergic reaction and soap is sufficient to clean the affected area. This natural oxidation patina is non-toxic and completely harmless.
"There is a simple home trick to avoid green discoloration on the skin due to wearing brass jewelry; apply clear nail polish or hairspray to the parts that touch the skin."
It is very important to take care of your jewelry if we want it to last a long time!
My advice
Taking care of your jewelry to ensure it lasts over time
-
Air and humidity are the worst enemies of oxidation, which increases if you leave your jewelry in contact with each other. Store your jewelry in its original packaging or in an airtight pouch.
-
When washing your hands or showering, it is advisable to remove bronze and brass jewelry. If you forget, remember to dry them very well.
-
Avoid contact with creams or perfumes and don't wear them when exercising, swimming, at the beach, or at the spa. Higher pH levels, chlorides, sulfides, any salinity or acidity accelerate oxidation.
-
Occasionally wipe the surface of your jewelry with a soft cloth, and you can use the one you will receive for free with your order.
-
When cleaning with specific products or DIY alternatives, extra care should be taken if there are precious or semi-precious stones.
How to clean bronze and brass jewelry
-
Use a specific commercial product designed for cleaning brass; it will also work for bronze.
-
Create a paste with lukewarm water and baking soda to rub onto the jewelry’s surface using a small brush or microfiber cloth, then rinse. Alternatively, you can use a soft cloth, neutral soap (neutral pH), and warm water.
How to clean silver jewelry
Silver jewelry can also oxidize (for example, if kept in a drawer for months), but it easily returns to its original appearance. It is a metal that shines more the more it is used.
-
Silver jewelry, being a soft metal, can be easily scratched, and these scratches cannot be removed with a simple cloth.
-
Rub the jewelry with a small brush, lukewarm water, and soap, or use toothpaste, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
-
Apply a specific cream product for silver.
How to clean plated metals
Plated jewelry is extremely sensitive. To maintain its shine, clean it with a soft polishing cloth. However, be very careful when cleaning your jewelry, as the gold plating can wear off.
During cleaning, keep it away from polishing liquids or strong chemicals.
I cannot guarantee that plated jewelry will last forever. It should be considered that plating, being a thin coating, will wear off over time, and the jewelry will lose its shine. However, following the tips above will help with proper maintenance.
The good news is that jewelry can be re-plated, polished, and restored to its original shine.
